The History
The history of Norwich is somewhat shrouded in mystery. That’s because experts tend to disagree on how the city came to be. Some scholars believe that Norwich was developed as a result of three Anglo- Saxon settlements joining into one cohesive unit. Then there are those that think that the city was only the result of one settlement after it had been abandoned by previous settlers. Either way, the town became fully established between 924 and 939 and became known for having its own monetary mint.

The Vikings were a strong influence on the town and, during the Norman Conquest, the city became known as one of the largest in England.

Museums and Art Galleries
You can’t spend all your time on the white sandy beaches, though it will be tempting…especially for the team here of Hotels Norwich! If you want to get a great idea of just how much history there is in the town of Norwich, you must visit the many museums and art galleries that will depict the town as it rose through the middle ages, and even as it survived during the English Civil War.

But if you want to get a true taste of the town’s history, here at Hotels Norwich, we always recommend you visit the Cathedral.

The Norwich Cathedral
Norwich has many tall and magnificent buildings, and is noted for its architecture, but no other building in the town gets the attention the Cathedral garners. This Church of England cathedral was built in dedication to the Holy and Undivided Trinity. The cathedral was begun in 1096 and wasn’t finished until 1145. Originally, it was constructed out of flint and mortar and was faced with a cream coloured Caen limestone. By the time it was finished, the Norman Tower was added as was a wooden spire that juts magnificently skyward.

The cathedral sustained major damage through the year, mostly due to the many conflicts the town has seen, and it has had to be rebuilt several times. Today, however, the cathedral can be seen from pretty much anywhere in the city. That should help you remember to visit the structure before you leave, as you won’t want to miss it.

This is just some of what Norwich has to offer. You really have to visit yourself to get the most out of it. So what are you waiting for? Let the team here at Hotels Norwich help you plan your trip and come visit us within the grand and historic city of Norwich.
